History of the Chocolate Chip Cookie

Invention

American cooks Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides invented The cookie in 1938 . She invented the recipe while she owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts.

At that time, the Toll House Inn was a popular restaurant for its home-cooked food. It is often said, incorrectly, that the two cooks accidentally invented the cookie but instead created the chocolate cookie.

In reality, Wakefield claimed to have intentionally invented the cookie. She said, “We served a thin caramel nut cookie with ice cream. Everyone seemed to love it, but I was trying to give them something different. I ended up inventing the Toll House cookie. ” She added pieces cut from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie.

Later in life

Wakefield’s cookbook, Toll House Tried and True Recipes, was first published in 1936 by Mr. Barrows & Company. The 1938 edition of this cookbook was the first to include the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie recipe, which quickly became the favorite cookie of Americans.

During World War II, Massachusetts soldiers stationed overseas shared the cookies they received in their CARE packages. Soon, hundreds of soldiers began asking their families to send them Toll House cookies. Wakefield was soon inundated with requests from around the world for the recipe, and the national cookie craze began.

7,8 The demand for the cookies helped spread its popularity beyond the eastern side of the United States. The cookie recipe arrived in the United Kingdom in 1956, with Maryland cookies being one of the top-selling cookies in the UK.
